For more than a century, the Yale School of Music has stood as one of the world’s great institutions for the education of musicians. Its legacy is visible not only in the extraordinary artists, scholars, educators, and leaders who have passed through our halls, but also in the values that have shaped their lives and work: artistic excellence, intellectual curiosity, generosity of spirit, and a deep belief in music’s power to illuminate, connect, and transform.
As we reflect on where we have been and look toward where we are going, I am filled with gratitude for the remarkable community that defines this school. Our students bring brilliance, imagination, discipline, and courage to their work every day. Our faculty—among the finest musicians and teachers in the world—offer mentorship that is both rigorous and deeply personal. Our staff sustain the school with creativity, professionalism, and care. And our alumni, Advisory Board members, donors, and friends extend the reach of the school and of music at Yale far beyond New Haven, helping to shape musical life across the country and around the world.
The uncertainty of our current historical moment, amid rapid social change and the rise of artificial intelligence, reminds us that the future of music will be built through collaboration. At Yale, we are uniquely positioned to bring music into conversation with the visual arts, the humanities, science, technology, public service, and global engagement. Partnerships across the university and with institutions beyond it allow our students and faculty to ask new questions, imagine new forms of performance and scholarship, and create work that speaks meaningfully to the world around us.
At the same time, we remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence. Excellence at the Yale School of Music is not simply a standard of performance; it is a way of approaching every aspect of our work with seriousness, openness, humility, and ambition. It asks us to honor tradition while also reexamining outdated assumptions. It asks us to prepare students not only for the musical world as it exists today but also for the one they will help create.
Our Strategic Plan gives us an exciting framework for that future. We are strengthening our programs, expanding opportunities for students, deepening our sense of community, and imagining new ways for music to serve society.
I look ahead with confidence and optimism. The Yale School of Music’s legacy is extraordinary, but its greatest promise lies in what we will build together next.
